Victorian Captain America
When I found this fancy dress plate of the 1897 “Incroyables” (side by side is below), I fell in love. For a few years I kept coming back to it and sighing heavily, wanting to make it. So I did. I just removed the blue stripes and kept only the red, making it into a Captain America!
Now the deets: The jacket is a heavily modified Truly Victorian 428 (1880 Jacket Bodice). I added tails and greatly increased the lapel size. I also added width to the front of the bodice, and lengthened the sleeves by 1.5 inches. AND I changed the placement of the darts to better support my shape.
Skirt is Truly Victorian 291 (1898 Walking Skirt). Shortened and added all the stripes of red fabric.
I also made two shortened Truly Victorian petticoats to go underneath for volume.
The corset underneath that give the shape is Simplicity 5006 – which I adore and you can pry out of my cold dead hands (I’ve made at least 6 iterations of the corset for various usages)
Red, Blue, and Cream fabrics are all silk taffeta. Collar and cuffs are silk velvet. The chemisette is cotton voile. Jacket is underlined with cotton twill and lined with cotton. Skirt is underlined with muslin.
