1960s Mary Poppins Dress
I have loved Mary Poppins for what seems like my whole life. I cannot remember a time when I didn’t have her in my head. Partly because of how perfect Julie Andrews is, but also because Mary is kind, gentle, and, I am 100% positive on this, neurospicy.
This look was born out of having a fair amount of leftover fabric from my Victorian Captain America. The body and the red details are both silk taffetas. The sleeves are made of chiffon. What I truly loved though, was capturing the feel of Mary’s Jolly Holiday dress in a wholly unexpected way. The red swags and bows felt so perfect. The swags themselves were cut for each panel of the skirt to line up on the seams. Then they were turned under on the edges, pressed, and sewn by hand on to the dress.
The dress is fully underlined with cotton for comfort and stability. I used Simplicity 9104 for the dress with few alterations. Mainly, I added bishop sleeves.
